Living and working on Sydney's Northern Beaches, Des was a frequent beachgoer. Spending many a weekend documenting the Surf Lifesaving Carnivals throughout the summers. The result is a comprehensive visual narrative of this unique Australian competition.

Des first started creating portfolios that comment on contemporary culture in the 1960s. All are depicted from reality in styles and techniques that directly relate to the subjects content.
