One of dozens of drawings that Des created when Sir John Hurley, the joint head of Berlei (Australian undergarment manufacturers), asked him to organise an art exhibition at Sydney’s Berlei House, featuring anything that interested women and showed their lives. As Des was already doing advertising for Berlei (and American company Warner’s lingerie, made under licence by Berlei), it was natural for Sir John to ask Des, who’s work he admired greatly. The large foyer of Berlei House was the display area and the exhibition was such a success that ABC TV filmed it, and used it extensively as a fill between programmes. 1964 also marked the first visit of The Beatles to Australian shores as part of their inaugural world tour. Record breaking crowds turned out to see them, women dropped like flies, and the rest is history.
